Yesterday I found myself involved in a pep rally for an elementary school. The Art director was on point to get the kids ready for the week and she lined up six teachers to work with her on a story she was reading for all the kids.
The story, you may know it, is about going on a Bear Hunt. In short it goes like this: “We are going on a Bear Hunt, we want a BIG Bear, What a beautiful day it is, we are NOT afraid, uh oh, there is a river; we can’t go over it, we can’t go under, we have to go through it! One of the teachers will make swimming motions, next the same ritual but after the uh oh, they encounter a swamp, they can’t go over it, they can’t go under it, they have to go THROUGH it. etc etc. The story ends with the group finding a bear and running back to get under the blanket.
The Art director went on to tell about real life and how you can encounter issues you cannot avoid. Just confront them, just work yourself through it. Although I’m not sure how much of the message got through to the kids, the message is still one that you can find back in our point about conflict. Don’t avoid it, see it as something that will cross your path and that is very natural to life. Conflicts, when handled well, can clear the air, improve relations, improve overall quality of the product. Don’t go over them, don’t dive under them, just go through it.
